So, with so many people getting bikes, I thought it would be a good idea to make a single post with links to all of my current posts (and maybe some reminders to write some other articles)
They arent in any particular order, Sooo....yea

Just wanted to say thanks for all the info! After I took the MSF class and got my endorsement I read through most of these posts when I was hunting for a bike and gear and they were a big help!

Lots of good info for sure, the used market in my city seems to a ton of 600’s with a few 250-300’s. The part that is bugging me, is how they are all close to the same price. Tough to justify getting a 300 Ninja when a 600 Ninja of similar km’s is close to the same price.

There is a very good reason. 600s are expensive to insure

more then you’d imagine.
just to ball park it: a 300 would cost me 3000 a year to insure.
a 600 would be closer to 12k a year, if the insurance company will even insure it

Really, that is crazy for insurance! What does your Jeep cost to insure if you don’t mind me asking, just in comparison.

AH, i get it. I dont own a jeep. SV is the model of my bike. I took inspiration from K-roll, but instead of SV tamer, its SV wrangler.
As for insuring something...a Legacy out back would cost me something like 4-5k a year

Ah ok, my truck insurance is 880 a year (now you hate me) so I would think the bike insurance might be similar to a little bit more.
Though it was you who had the Jeep but now that I think of it, it was Mr. Engineer

Yeah, the way y’all drive over there makes me nervous. I used to run to Woodbridge all the time. I stuck to the 407 because no one was ever on it.

Still trying to figure out what to do. We can ride out from Guelph to the big City here? I can show you the Walk of Fame and where Bieber’s star is on it.... we can take a pic with our helmets on playing guitar?

You say a big Adventure bike is a no no. But what about a midsized adventure bike as a starter bike?
I’m thinking of the BMW F700GS. Sweet bike and when equipped with the factory lowered chassis it fits me perfectly. It’s light at 430lbs not overly powerful at 75hp and I can almost flat foot it with both feet (flat foot one side and tippy toe the other).

funny enough, I actually HAVE the F800R (same motor chassis, shorter, more street oriented suspension
I wouldnt really recommend it. that 75 HP is closer to 80, and its a VERY torquey motor at low rpms. not to mention the gearing is just plain stupid (1500RPM different between the top 3 gears at 60mph? wut?)
You would be better off with a V-strom or the versys 650. just because that motor is just. bleh.
OH, and it vibrates something NASTY at 5-7K rpm. numbs your hands within minutes. you can do things to mitigate it...but no.
if you HAVE to stay BMW, look at the G650GS
Luc - The Acadian Oppo
> bob and john
12/07/2015 at 14:09 | 0 |
both the V-strom and the versys are ~2” taller seat height so those are out.
The G650GS would work but seems a bit vanila.
I should probably mention that I’m not entirely new to bikes. I’ve owned and raced multiple motocross bikes but I’ve never actually driven a bike on the street per say.

I’m not a fan of the 800 motor/trans combination that BMW uses, lets just leave it at that.
if you REALLY want it, and you have some experience, i guess its not that bad. But then why not just get a F800R? the 700GS is pretty junk off-road (LOL cast wheels and junk suspension) compared to the 800GS. So why not just get something that will actually be decent on the road?
